I will admit that smartphones can do a lot of things. You can use them to:
- Watch movies online.
- Do online banking.
- Publish blog posts.
- Purchase things online.
Okay, you get the idea; you can do a lot with your smartphone (They are like mini computers that you can carry around with you).
Despite being powerful, they are still limited in their functionality.
Desktop Computers And Laptop Computers Are The Best Tools For Coding
If you are writing code or compiling code, there is a high probability that you are going to do it on a desktop computer or a laptop computer.
By the way, I am not saying that it is impossible to write code or compile code on a smartphone, I am highlighting the fact, that a desktop computer or a laptop computer would be the most appropriate tool for the job.
So, desktop computers and laptop computers are still useful in 2022 (And, they will still be very useful for a very long time to come).
Customer Service Representatives Use Desktop Computers
If you were to go to your bank to conduct business, the bank teller would have a desktop computer at hand.
If you are dealing with a customer service representative for your internet service provider, they will have a desktop computer readily available to take down the necessary information.
And, why is that so, my friend?
Because the desktop computer is the best tool for the job.
Music Producers Use Desktop Computers And Laptop Computers
Music producers are known for using desktop computers and laptop computers for their music production.
Why?
Because those are the most appropriate tools for the job.
I would like to point out that some music programs allow the user to do music production via a smartphone or a tablet computer. However, they are not as great as their desktop counterpart.
Advertising Agencies Use Desktop Computers
Advertising agencies are known for using desktop computers to do their audiovisual work.
You will never catch an employee of an advertising agency using a smartphone to do that.
After all, the desktop computer is the most appropriate tool for the job.
Law Enforcement Agencies Use Desktop Computers
If you were to walk into a police station to file a complaint, the desk sergeant is going to write down your information and transfer what they wrote unto a desktop computer.
The traffic cop will have a laptop computer in his police car.
For the record, there are police departments that use smartphones (But, they are mainly used by police officers when they are on the go).
Intelligence agencies, on the other hand, are known to utilize:
- Desktop computers
- Laptop computers
- Tablet computers
- Smartphones
Despite law enforcement agencies using all of the electronic devices, they still use desktop computers (And, they will continue to use desktop computers).
Media Houses Recognize The Importance Of Desktop Computers
If you are working for a newspaper company, you will be assigned a desktop computer; most of them will allow you to use a laptop computer (All the editor cares about is you meeting your deadline).
Radio stations will utilize all the technologies; they will:
- Use the desktop computer to run advertisements and automated radio segments.
- Allow the DJ or broadcaster to use their laptop computer because they have their music stored on them.
- Allow the DJ or broadcaster to use a tablet computer or smartphone to play music because some of them have their music stored in the cloud.
- Allow the DJ or broadcaster to use a desktop computer, a laptop computer, a tablet computer or a smartphone to interact with listeners via the radio station’s social media accounts.
Television stations will also utilize all the technologies.
For production purposes, they will use a desktop computer or a laptop computer to save time.
When the newscaster is reading the news, they will have either a laptop computer or a tablet computer right next to them (Which comes in very handy when the teleprompter stops working).
Sometimes, the newscaster and the director will use their smartphone to exchange bits and pieces of information with each other.
Despite the media houses using all of those electronic devices, the desktop computer is still king.
Final Thoughts
The average person who uses their smartphone to do everything will be blindsided; they may wrongfully believe that laptop computers and desktop computers are no longer needed in today’s modern world.
There are WordPress bloggers who will admit to you that they cannot do everything via the WordPress Mobile App and that they need either a laptop computer or a desktop computer to format their blog posts and customize their themes.
Therefore, one cannot rule out the importance of the role that laptop computers and desktop computers play in modern-day society.
I do everything on my smart phone, and have yet to feel the desire to switch to my laptop.

If you were a music producer or coder, you would have gladly used a laptop computer.

I instinctively knew that you preferred using your MacBook to blog on.

I’ve tried using PyDroid to write some simple python scripts on my phone and tablet. Utterly useless.
I don’t honestly use my phone for any more than calls, texts, taking pics of my work and attaching them to emails. Overall, it’s honestly all they’re really good for. A laptop at minimum, is still very much needed for most things.

I NEED my desktop/laptop – especially dual monitors for big projects – but also recognize how helpful it is to have my tablet and phone for ‘on the go’ work. 😉

I am in none of those roles you highlighted, and I essentially use my iPhone for everything except for one thing that I use my laptop for…my annual taxes. Otherwise, Renard, I haven’t anything that I can’t do on my iPhone that would require me to use a laptop. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I booted up my laptop.

How do you watch videos and movies? On a small phone screen you hold in your hand? Honestly, not even the worst movie ever made deserves such a cruel fate. 😐

You are right. A small device is handy. I am a person who feels watching a 2 hr movie needs to be on a big screen and not on a phone. So for long time work a laptop or desktop is needed. I just do casual blogs on my phone but today mine was special and I went to my desktop.

Dear Renard,
I concur with Robin, especially after having worked on four theses!
Like academics, most if not all lawyers are also sensible enough to use desktop or laptop computers for important matters.
In many respects, my multimedia and animated blog can be too powerful and feature-rich for iPad, iPhone, tablet or other portable devices to handle properly or adequately.
Happy September to you!

I know people type on their phones bit I can’t fathom how someone could do large amounts at any kind of speed the way you can with a keyboard. I only use my phone to edit or comment, not write the post.

Let’s not forget blogging and all other forms of fact and fiction writing. Only a desktop computer gives you the option to use a mechanical keyboard. And who wants to spend some hours of earnest writing on a handheld device with a super small screen anyway?
Or watching YT videos or movies? Nothing better than 24″ and up LCD screens.

Probably that might not be the case few years from now. The mobile phone is actuallly taking up alot of work that was previously done by laptops and desktops. I agree it is a challenge to do some tasks on the mobile phone, but that will end soon. my two cents…

I use my laptop for everything – paying bills, blogging, and other social media such as LinkedIn and beBee. I have 2 browsers open at all times and my programs are spread between 4 browsers with some duplication. Libre Office is open, as well. Before I retired, my setup at work was a laptop and 4 monitors. There were numerous programs that we used and were kept open for quick access.
I guess it is what one is used to but it would take too long for me to blog from my phone.

I try to spend as little of my time as possible using the smartphone. There’s hardly anything useful for me to do except for dealing with email and messaging, yet, on the other hand, so many distractions. I absolutely love the feel of using desktop computer to do stuff – just sitting down at a desk in your home office and starting it up immediately puts me in the right mood.
