Growing up, I always heard from time to time, that “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away.” The truth is that I have always wondered if there was any merit in that saying, or if it was a ploy by agriculturists to boost the sales of their apples.
One thing that I never doubted was the apple’s nutritional value.
Everyone from around the world can all agree on the fact, that the apple is indeed a healthy fruit (And, that is probably one of the main reasons why so many of us do not hesitate to eat them).
So, without further ado, it is time to explore the health benefits of apple consumption.
1.) Eating Apples Can Help With Weight Loss
Are you one of those people who are trying to lose weight?
Or, are you one of those people who are slim and are interested in maintaining a healthy weight?
Whether you are an overweight person who wants to lose excess weight or a slim person who wants to maintain their physique, eating apples will help you to maintain those goals of yours.
And, what makes that possible?
Apple’s high fibre and water content make that possible.
2.) Apple Consumption Will Lower Your Risk Of Getting Type 2 Diabetes
With type 2 diabetes, the body’s ability to control and utilize sugar (glucose) as fuel is compromised (And that is a very bad thing).
For starters, apples are low on the glycaemic index (We have apple’s high fibre content to thank for that).
The high flavonoid content in apples also has a part to play in the improvement of one’s insulin sensitivity.
3.) The Regular Consumption Of Apples Has The Potential Of Protecting You From Heart Disease
No one wants to get heart disease (They would prefer that their heart remains healthy).
On a positive note, the polyphenols (which are protective plant compounds) in apples, will contribute in the area of keeping your heart healthy.
So, the next time you are tempted to reach for those greasy fried potato chips, wipe that thought out of your mind and reach for an apple instead.
4.) Eating Apples Can Help Keep Certain Types Of Cancer Away
According to Kendall K. Morgan’s article, How Many People Die of Cancer a Year?, cancer had claimed the lives of more than ten million people worldwide in 2021.
You and I can do our best to lower that number by eating apples on a regular basis (That way, we do not contribute to the number of cancer deaths from around the world).
The antioxidants and the fibre within apples will help to prevent us from acquiring certain types of cancers.
5.) Regular Apple Consumption May Help To Prevent The Formation Of Gallstones
Gallstones form when the gallbladder’s bile solidifies as a result of too much cholesterol.
Therefore, consuming apples (which have a high fibre content) will help you to maintain that weight of yours; thus maintaining healthy cholesterol levels in the process.
The very thought of getting gallstones should be enough to convince one to add apples to their diet.
Final Thoughts
Apple consumption can enhance our health. As you have learned, they can:
- Help us to manage our weight.
- Help to lower our risk of getting type 2 diabetes.
- Help in the prevention of heart disease.
- Help keep certain cancers away.
- Help prevent the formation of gallstones.
So, never give up the opportunity to eat an apple or two.
Renard, this is so funny, an hour ago I posted a picture of apples growing nearby and put in the quote of one apple a day keeps the doctor away! I love apples 🙂

I have a one track mind: I initially thought the post’s title was about the brand Apple 😂. But I completely agree with your thoughts on the fruit 🍎 🍏.

😀 As someone who has deeply immersed themselves into technology, I can see the reason why you thought that it was the brand Apple.
However, this is about the fruit.

I love apples but not all apples love me. If they are cooked it seems to be okay, and the golden delicious ones as well – so I guess I go towards the mellower ones. My husband eats one a day on the way home, and he is indeed, the picture of health.

Pink lady apples are the best! Juicy, sweet and delicious. As a kid, I used to have them all the time but not so much as an adult. I wonder why? 🤔 Maybe it’s just easier to get a banana or a mandarin from the fruit bowl than an apple. 🤔

How interesting! I didn’t know that about apples and Type 2 diabetes or gallstones.
When we returned to in-person learning at my daughter’s grade school, I didn’t know if kids brought apples any more for their teachers so I found a little glass apple for my daughter to give her first grade teacher. Reading this makes me think we should bring back the tradition!
