Have you ever had those moments where all you wanted to do was sleep?
If you are truly a human being and not a robot or a cyborg, your answer will undoubtedly be, “Yes!”
From a logical perspective, I should go to sleep whenever I am tired. But, when I have a blog post due, I need to stay awake (And, staying awake requires that I play some serious mind games with myself).
Would you like to know what some of those mind games are?
Well, since I brought it up, you are interested as ever to find out. Therefore, I will gladly spill the proverbial beans.
I Believe In My Ability To Get It Done
The God’s/Goddess’ truth is that I have composed blog posts many times in the past when I was in a semi-somnolent state (And, I got away with it most times).
As strange as this may sound, it is possible to write when you are sleepy. But, it is always better to write when you are fully coherent.
During our schooldays, we did our school assignments (the ones that we had to present to our schoolteacher the following day) at home when we were mentally exhausted.
And I would also like to point out, that University students know what it is like to stay up reading their textbooks late at night.
So, a large percentage of us are psychologically programmed to be somewhat functional in a sleep-deprived state.
The trick is not to wait until you are extremely sleepy before doing the task at hand, because if you do, sleep will have the upper hand and you will end up falling asleep.
A slightly drowsy state will provide you with enough mind-power to get your writing done.
I highly recommend that you read, How Being Tired Can Make You A Better Writer by Kristen Lamb (It would inspire you to write when you are sleepy).
I Prepare Coffee Or Tea
A lot of writers love to prepare coffee or tea before they write, because those two beverages contain caffeine.
Caffeine helps to:
- Increase our alertness.
- Boost our memory.
- Stabilise our mood.
- Improve our reaction time.
Caffeine changes the chemistry of our brain by preventing adenosine from binding to the brain, thus keeping us awake.
So, the next time you are feeling a bit sleepy and you know that it is imperative that you get your quota of writing done, prepare some coffee or tea.
However, the following types of people should stay completely away from caffeine-consumption:
- Those who are sensitive to caffeine.
- Those who suffer from high blood pressure.
- Those who have glaucoma.
- Those who suffer from epilepsy.
Unfortunately, caffeine-consumption is not for everyone.
I Sit At My Desk
Yes, my friend, I have a desk (It is my workstation — the place where my laptop computer, my pens and my notepad are situated).
If I am sleepy, I know that it would be counterproductive to attempt composing the draft copy for my blog post on my Android smartphone when I am lying comfortably in bed.
So, sitting at my desk, typing away busily on the keypad of my laptop computer is the better option for me (I know for a fact, that I would not fall asleep in the middle of my content creation process).
And, the chair is not all that comfortable (That also helps to keep me awake).
I Take Short Walks Around The House
At intervals, I will remove myself from my desk; I walk around the house with the intentions of allowing the blood flow to recirculate throughout my body; which is another excellent method of keeping myself awake.
Walking around the house usually involves:
- Walking to the television (I never make the mistake of turning it on).
- Walking to the refrigerator (I would look for some fruit to munch on).
- Walking outside of the house and spending a few minutes with my dog.
- Walking outside of the house and looking at the sky (The sky looks wonderful at night).
Then, I would go back to my workstation and complete the draft copy for my blog post.
Trust me, when I tell you that taking short walks around the house at night helps to get rid of the sleepy feeling.
Have you ever gotten up in the middle of the night to urinate in the toilet and when you made your way back in bed you were unable to sleep?
Well, the reason for that is walking helped to increase your heart-rate as well as increasing the blood flow to other areas of your body.
Now, to be quite honest, I am a night-person (I am usually more alert at nighttime; but there are some nights when I am totally exhausted and one of the best ways of combating that sleepy feeling is to walk around the house).
I Listen To Electronic Dance Music
I love listening to electronic dance music (That genre of music is good at putting me in a lively mood and if I play it at nighttime, it is going to keep me awake).
I have folders containing lots of electronic dance music — enough to satisfy my listening pleasure for many hours.
In your case, you can listen to your favourite genre of music (You are not obligated to listen to electronic dance music until you have completed the draft copy for your blog post).
And, you know that people who listen to their favourite genre of music can party all night long.
So, my friend, those are some of the mind games that I play with myself (Especially when I want to stay up at night with the intentions of completing the draft copy for my blog post).
With a bit of determination combined with creativity, you can also get your quota of blogging done in spite of sleep wanting to possess your entire being.
Do you have special mind games that you play with yourself in order to stay awake at night?
If your answer happens to be, “Yes,” I would love to read about your unique method via the comments thread of my blog.
Also, thank you for checking out this interesting blog post of mine!
